Every mattress is scored against the same ten published criteria, and each of the ten scores is shown alongside the total. What those criteria measure, and how the total is set, are laid out on our How we rate page. The work behind the scores is desk work: we read published specifications, warranty documents and trial terms, and cross-check them against each manufacturer's own pages. We do not buy these mattresses and sleep on them, and no score here comes from in-home testing.

We compare the mattresses you can actually buy in Australia — with the prices, trial periods and warranty conditions that apply here, not the ones on the American version of the same brand’s website.

Why this site exists

A mattress is one of the few things you will spend a thousand dollars or more on without being able to test it properly first. Ten minutes lying on a showroom bed with your shoes on tells you very little about how you will sleep on it for the next eight years.

What you can compare properly before you buy is everything that is written down: what the mattress is made of, how thick it is, how firm it comes, how long you have to change your mind, what the warranty actually covers, and what quietly voids it. That is the part we do.

What we cover

Mattresses sold to Australian customers, priced in Australian dollars. We read the Australian product pages, because terms differ by market — the same brand can offer a 365-night trial in the United States and 100 nights here. A review written for American readers is not a reliable guide to what you are being sold.

How we score

Every mattress is scored from 0 to 10 against the same ten criteria:

All ten are published on our comparison page, not just the total, and How We Rate explains what each one measures. That matters, because a mattress can rank well overall and still be the wrong one for you. If you sleep on your side, edge support matters less to you than pressure relief — and you can read that off the individual scores instead of trusting a single number to have weighed it the way you would.

The overall score is our judgement rather than a plain average of the ten. Where we set it above or below what the individual scores suggest, something specific warranted it: an unusually restrictive warranty, or a trial period short enough that you may not find out in time.

How we research

We work from documented facts. For every mattress, we check the following against the manufacturer’s own Australian product page:

  • Dimensions, height, materials and construction
  • Firmness options, and which sizes they are available in
  • Price by size, and what a promotion actually discounts
  • Trial period, and the conditions attached to it
  • Warranty length and — more importantly — what voids it
  • Delivery and returns terms, including whether “free delivery” really covers the whole country
  • Certifications, and what each one actually certifies

Warranty conditions are where we spend the most time, because that is where brands differ most and advertise least. One mattress in our current line-up voids its ten-year warranty the moment you put it on an adjustable base. That is in the terms, not in the marketing, and you would have no reason to go looking for it.

What we do not do

We do not buy these mattresses and sleep on them. Our assessments are based on published specifications and terms, cross-checked against the manufacturer’s own pages — not on in-home testing. We would rather say so than imply an experience we have not had.

So: when we describe how a mattress is built, that is documented and you can verify it. When we say who it suits, that is our reading of the documentation, and you should treat it as an opinion.

Prices and promotions change constantly, and terms change without notice. We re-check what we cover, but there will be moments when this site is behind.

Before you buy, confirm the price, the trial period and the warranty on the retailer’s own page. That is the version that binds them — ours does not.
