Buying a mattress online removes the showroom, which is mostly an improvement — ten minutes lying on a bed in your shoes was never a good test. What replaces it is the trial period, so the trial terms are the part worth reading closely.
What compression does
The mattress is vacuum-compressed, rolled and boxed. Foam, latex and pocket-spring hybrids all survive this; the process is well established and is not, on its own, a quality compromise.
What it does change is the first few days. Expect the mattress to take between 24 and 72 hours to reach full height, and expect a smell when you first open it. Off-gassing is normal, it is strongest on day one, and airing the room shortens it. What you should not do is judge firmness before the mattress has fully expanded — it will feel firmer than it is.
One thing compression is not: reversible. You cannot re-compress a mattress at home, which is why returns work the way they do.
Read the trial before you read the reviews
Trial periods are the headline feature of this category, and they vary far more in the details than in the number of nights.
- Is there a minimum break-in period? Many brands require you to keep it 21 to 30 nights before a return is allowed. This is reasonable — but it means a "100-night trial" may really be a window between night 30 and night 100.
- Who collects it, and who pays? Some brands arrange and pay for collection. Others require you to arrange freight, and a queen mattress that will not fit back in its box is expensive to send anywhere.
- Is your postcode covered? This is the one that catches people out in Australia. Free returns are frequently limited to metropolitan areas, with regional and remote postcodes either excluded or charged. Check yours specifically.
- One return only? Most trials allow a single return or a single exchange per customer.
- Any deductions? Restocking fees, non-refundable delivery charges and clawed-back bundle discounts all appear in the terms.
- What happens to the returned mattress? Brands that donate or recycle usually say so. Brands that do not usually do not say.

If you are outside a capital city, treat the coverage row as the deciding one. A 150-night trial you cannot use without paying freight both ways is a worse offer than a 120-night trial with free collection at your address.
How to judge a mattress you cannot lie on
Without a showroom you are reading a specification instead of a surface, so it is worth knowing which parts of a specification carry information and which are decoration.
- Layer-by-layer construction, with depths. The most informative thing a brand can publish, and the thing the weakest brands leave out. Two mattresses described as "medium" with the same total height can have comfort layers that differ by several centimetres, and that difference is most of the feel.
- Foam density, where it is given. Rarely published, because it is the number that predicts how fast the mattress softens. A brand that publishes it is telling you something; a brand that does not is telling you something too.
- Spring type and count, in that order. Whether the coils are individually wrapped matters far more than how many there are.
- Total height. Useful mainly for checking your sheets fit and, on a powered base, whether it will bend cleanly.
- Certifications. Foam and textile certifications tell you what is not in the materials. They say nothing about comfort or durability, so read them as a floor rather than a recommendation.
Your rights sit on top of the trial
A trial period is a commercial offer from the brand. It sits alongside the guarantees under Australian Consumer Law, which apply regardless of what the trial says and cannot be excluded by the terms. A mattress must be of acceptable quality and must last a reasonable time given its price and description. If it fails on those grounds, the trial having expired does not remove the remedy.

What day one actually looks like
- Check the box before the driver leaves. Most deliveries are to the front door, not to the room. If the box is damaged, note it then — it is much harder to raise afterwards.
- Move the box to the room first. Compressed, it fits through doorways and up stairs. Expanded, it may not. Of everything on this list, this is the step that is hardest to undo.
- Put the base in place and the mattress on it before cutting. Expansion starts immediately.
- Cut the outer plastic, not the mattress. Use the tool supplied if there is one, and keep the blade shallow — the cover is directly under the wrap.
- Let it breathe. Open a window. The smell is strongest in the first few hours and typically clears in a day or two.
- Wait before judging. Give it the full 24 to 72 hours to reach height, then the full break-in period before deciding. A mattress judged on night one is judged at its least representative.
- Keep the paperwork. Order confirmation, delivery date and the trial terms as they were on the day you bought. The trial clock usually starts at delivery, and you may need to prove when that was.
Practical things people forget
- Getting it inside. A boxed queen commonly weighs 30 to 45 kilograms in an awkward shape. Check stairs, lifts and doorways, and plan on a second person.
- Unbox it where it will live. Once it expands it is much harder to move through a doorway.
- Base requirements. Warranties often specify a maximum gap between slats, or require a centre rail on a queen and above. The wrong base can void the warranty and can also cause the sagging you would want to claim for.
- Your old mattress. Some brands remove it on delivery. Most do not, and council hard-waste collection can be months away. Sort this out before delivery day, not after.
Getting rid of the old one
This is the part of the process nobody plans for, and in Australia it has a limited number of answers. Council hard-waste collection is usually free but often runs on a booking system with a wait measured in weeks or months, so book it before the new mattress arrives rather than after. Commercial removal services will collect at short notice for a fee. Some retailers offer removal as a paid add-on at checkout, which is worth pricing against a private service rather than assuming it is the cheapest option.
Mattress recycling exists in most states and diverts the steel, foam and timber rather than sending the whole thing to landfill; some councils route hard waste to a recycler by default and some do not. If the mattress is in genuinely good condition, charities occasionally accept them, but hygiene rules mean most will not — check before you load it into a car.
What does not work is leaving it on the nature strip without a booking. Most councils treat that as illegal dumping and fine for it.
Where it fits

How long does the smell last?
Usually a day or two, occasionally up to a week with dense foam in a poorly ventilated room. It is strongest immediately after unwrapping. Airing the room and running a fan shortens it.
Can I put a boxed mattress on the floor?
You can, but most warranties require a supportive base and some specify slat spacing or a centre rail. Sleeping on the floor also restricts airflow underneath, which can cause moisture to collect against the underside. Check the warranty before making it a permanent arrangement.
What if it does not fully expand?
Give it the full window the brand states, in a warm room — foam expands more slowly in the cold. If a corner is still visibly low after that, photograph it and raise it with the brand while you are comfortably inside the trial period.
