We earn advertising and referral fees from many of the brands we rank, and those fees affect where they appear.

Top3 Mattress compares mattresses sold in Australia, and we make our money when a reader buys through one of our links. Brands pay us advertising and referral fees, and those arrangements affect which mattresses we cover and how high they sit in our rankings. Some mattresses here have no arrangement with us at all.

Every mattress is scored against the same ten published criteria, and each of the ten scores is shown alongside the total. What those criteria measure, and how the total is set, are laid out on our How we rate page. The work behind the scores is desk work: we read published specifications, warranty documents and trial terms, and cross-check them against each manufacturer's own pages. We do not buy these mattresses and sleep on them, and no score here comes from in-home testing.

We do not cover every mattress sold in Australia, and the ones we can earn a commission on are more likely to be among the ones we do cover. Prices, trial lengths and warranty terms change without notice, so check the brand's own page before you buy. A ranking here is not a guarantee about a product and not an endorsement of it. Our full terms are set out in the Terms of use.

Best Mattress Bundles

Bundles pair a mattress with pillows, a protector, or a base. Compare them against buying the pieces separately — the discount is not always real.

A bundle pairs a mattress with pillows, a protector, sheets or a base at a single price. Sometimes the saving is real. The only way to find out is to price the pieces separately — and to read what happens to the bundle if you return the mattress.

Price the components before anything else

Bundle savings are usually calculated against the recommended retail price of each item, and the RRP on a pillow or a protector is often a number nobody pays. Look up what each component sells for on its own, add those up, and compare that total against the bundle. That is the actual discount.

Then ask a second question: would you have bought these items at all? A saving on something you did not want is not a saving. Bundled sheets and pillows are frequently the brand's entry-level line, and a bundle built around them is a way of moving them rather than a way of saving you money.

The three shapes a bundle comes in

The bundles on this list are not variations on one offer. They fall into three groups, and the group determines which questions matter.

Mattress plus furniture. A bed frame or a bed base included with the mattress. This is the largest kind of bundle by value and the one where the saving is most likely to be real, because the furniture has a genuine standalone price you can look up. It is also the one with the most consequential fine print, because a bundled base can be tied to the mattress warranty.

Mattress plus bedding. Pillows, a protector, sheets, or a combination. Lower value, easier for the brand to give away, and the group where RRP inflation is most common. The protector is the item worth having; the rest depends on whether you would have bought them.

No extra items, just a price against RRP. Some "bundles" are a mattress sold at a discount presented against a struck-through figure. There is nothing wrong with a discount, but it is not a bundle, and it should be compared against the mattress's ordinary selling price rather than against the RRP.

Work out which of the three you are being offered before comparing two bundles against each other. They are not comparable otherwise.

The return question is the important one

This is where bundles differ most from buying separately, and it is almost never on the product page.

  • If you return the mattress under trial, what happens to the rest? Some brands take back the whole bundle. Some let you keep the accessories and deduct their full retail value from your refund — which can turn a "free" pillow into a $150 charge.
  • Is the bundle discount clawed back? Returning one item can reprice everything else at full RRP.
  • Does the trial cover the accessories at all? Usually not. Pillows and protectors are commonly excluded on hygiene grounds, which is reasonable — but it means the trial you are relying on may only apply to part of what you bought.
  • Is it one shipment or several? If the base ships separately and later, your trial period may still start from the mattress delivery date.

Get the answers before you buy, not after you have decided the mattress is wrong.

Pricing a bundle, step by step

Five minutes with a calculator settles most of these. The method matters more than any particular example.

  1. Write down the bundle price in the size you actually want. Not the "from" price. Bundles are usually advertised at the smallest size and the step up to Queen is not proportional across the components.
  2. Price the mattress on its own, in that size, at today's selling price. Not the RRP — the number it is actually sold at this week.
  3. Price each accessory at what it sells for standalone, again at today's price rather than RRP.
  4. Subtract the mattress from the bundle. What is left is what you are paying for the accessories. Compare that to step three.
  5. Then strike out anything you would not have bought. If the accessories come to $220 and you only wanted the protector, the honest comparison is bundle-minus-mattress against the protector's price alone.

Bundles pass this test more often than cynicism suggests, particularly the ones that include a base or a frame. What they rarely survive is step five, which is why brands prefer to advertise the total saving rather than the per-item one.

The protector is not a bonus

Worth understanding clearly: most mattress warranties are void if the mattress is stained. Not damaged — stained. A protector is therefore closer to a requirement than a gift, and a bundle that includes one is bundling something you needed anyway.

Two things to check. First, whether the brand requires their protector specifically, or any waterproof protector. Second, whether the protector is genuinely waterproof rather than water-resistant, because the warranty clause turns on whether liquid reached the mattress.

A third thing, less obvious: a thick or poorly fitted protector changes the surface feel of the mattress. If you are assessing a mattress during its trial period, use the protector from night one so that what you are judging is what you will actually sleep on.

Bundled pillows rarely suit the person who gets them

A pillow has to match your sleeping position and your shoulder width, and a bundled pillow is chosen by neither. Side sleepers generally need a taller, firmer pillow than back sleepers, and stomach sleepers need a flatter one than either. A single pillow included with every mattress sold cannot be right for all three.

That does not make it worthless — it makes it a spare, or a guest pillow, or something to try. What it should not be is the reason you chose the bundle. If the pillow is doing significant work in the advertised saving, discount it to what you would actually have paid for a pillow you did not choose, which for most people is close to nothing.

One exception worth naming: if the mattress you are buying is significantly firmer or softer than your old one, your existing pillow may no longer be the right height, because the distance between your head and the mattress will have changed. A spare pillow at a different loft is genuinely useful in that specific case.

Sheets and sizing

Bundled sheets are the component most likely to be the wrong specification rather than merely unwanted, because mattress depth varies more than sheet manufacturers assume. The mattresses on this site range from 20 cm to 33 cm, and a fitted sheet cut for a 25 cm mattress will not stay on a 33 cm one.

Check the pocket depth on any bundled sheet set against the mattress it is bundled with — they usually match, but sets carried across a whole range often do not. And note that Australian bed sizes do not match US or UK sizes of the same name, so imported bedding bought separately can fit badly even when the label says Queen.

Bundled bases

If a base is included, check whether the mattress warranty requires that base or merely permits it. Some warranties are only valid on a base sold by the same brand, in which case the bundle is not a discount so much as the actual cost of ownership. Also confirm slat spacing and whether a centre rail is included for queen and larger — the wrong base can void the warranty and cause the sagging you would want to claim for.

Two practical questions beyond the warranty. Is the base delivered assembled or flat-packed, and if flat-packed, how long does assembly take and does it need two people? And does the bundled base fit the room the way you expect — a frame with an integrated headboard occupies more floor length than the mattress does, which matters in a small bedroom.

A short checklist

  • Price every component separately and compare the totals.
  • Confirm what happens to the accessories if the mattress goes back.
  • Confirm whether the accessories are covered by the trial at all.
  • Confirm whether the protector is required to keep the warranty valid.
  • Confirm whether a bundled base is required, permitted, or irrelevant to the warranty.
  • Confirm the bundle price in your size, not the advertised starting size.

If the bundle survives all six, it is a genuine saving. If it does not, buying the mattress on its own and choosing the accessories yourself is usually both cheaper and better.

Common questions

Are mattress bundles ever actually cheaper?

Yes, particularly when the bundle includes a base or a frame, because those have real standalone prices that are harder to inflate. Bundles built from bedding are the ones where the advertised saving and the real saving diverge most.

Can I swap a bundled item for something else?

Sometimes, and it is worth asking. Brands that will not discount the mattress will occasionally substitute within a bundle — a second protector instead of a pillow, or a different sheet size. The worst outcome is being told no.

If I return the mattress, do I have to return the pillows?

It depends entirely on the terms, and the two common answers are opposites: some brands take everything back, others let you keep the accessories and deduct their retail value from the refund. This is the single most important thing to establish before buying a bundle.

Does buying a bundle affect the trial period?

The mattress trial normally runs as usual, but if the components ship on different dates it is worth confirming which delivery starts the clock. Accessories are typically excluded from the trial altogether on hygiene grounds.
