Australian mattress sizes: every size in centimetres, and how to choose
The short answer: Australia uses seven common mattress sizes. From smallest to largest: Single (92 × 188 cm), Long Single (92 × 203 cm), King Single (107 × 203 cm), Double (138 × 188 cm), Queen (153 × 203 cm), King (183 × 203 cm) and Super King (203 × 203 cm). These are an industry convention rather than a legal standard, so a brand’s own figures can be a centimetre or two different — check the product page before you buy a frame or sheets to match.
The names also do not mean the same thing overseas. An Australian King is narrower than an American King and much wider than a British one, which matters as soon as you buy bedding or a frame made for another market. The rest of this guide covers the measurements that decide which size actually works for you: the room, the bed base, the sheets, and the price in the size you want rather than the size that is advertised.
Australian mattress sizes in centimetres
| Size | Width × length | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 92 × 188 cm | One sleeper. The narrowest size, and one of only two at the shorter 188 cm length |
| Long Single | 92 × 203 cm | Single width at full length. Two side by side make a Split King |
| King Single | 107 × 203 cm | One sleeper who wants more width than a Single and the full 203 cm length |
| Double | 138 × 188 cm | Two sleepers at the shorter length, or one sleeper who wants a lot of width |
| Queen | 153 × 203 cm | Two sleepers at full length. The size this site uses to compare prices |
| King | 183 × 203 cm | 30 cm wider than a Queen, the same length |
| Super King | 203 × 203 cm | Square, and 20 cm wider than a King. Needs a large room and Super King bedding |
Brands round these differently. Sealy, for example, lists its Single at 91.5 × 190 cm, its King Single at 105.5 × 203 cm and its Queen at 152.5 × 203 cm. A centimetre either way makes no difference to how a mattress sleeps, but it can matter for a tight-fitting frame, an ensemble base made for a different brand, or a fitted sheet that was already a snug fit.
The differences that decide it
Length. Single and Double are 188 cm long; every other size is 203 cm. That 15 cm is the difference people notice most. If you are tall, or sleep with your feet near the end of the bed, a Double can feel short even though it is wide enough.
Width per person. Divide the width between two sleepers and the sizes look different. A Double gives each person about 69 cm, a Queen about 76 cm, and a King about 91.5 cm — roughly the width of a Single each. A Super King gives each about 101 cm. If one of you moves a lot at night, the step from Queen to King is the one that changes most.
Single against King Single. A King Single is 15 cm wider and 15 cm longer than a Single. It suits one adult far better, but it needs its own frame and its own sheets: neither part of a Single bed carries over.
Measure the room before the mattress
- Measure the frame, not the mattress. A bed frame is usually larger than the mattress on every side, and longer again with a headboard. Take the frame’s outside dimensions from its product page and subtract them from the room.
- Check what is left. Look at the walking space on each side and at the foot of the bed, and at anything that opens towards it — the door, wardrobe doors, drawers in a bedside table.
- Measure the path in. Stairs, landings, lifts and doorways. A boxed mattress fits through almost anything until it is unrolled; a mattress delivered flat, or an ensemble base, arrives at full size.
- Think about the bedding. Moving up a size means new sheets, a new quilt cover and usually a new protector. Price those in at the same time as the mattress.
Height: the measurement most size charts leave out
A size name tells you width and length. Height — how thick the mattress is — decides three other things: whether your fitted sheets stay on, how high the bed sits when you get in and out, and whether the mattress will bend on an adjustable base.
Fitted sheets are sold with a pocket or wall depth. It needs to be deeper than the mattress, with room for a protector or anything else you put on top. A sheet cut for a 25 cm mattress will not stay on a 33 cm one. For the height you sit at, add the height of the base to the height of the mattress.
The table below lists the height of every mattress we rank, with its advertised starting price, its Queen price and the step between the two. It reads those figures from the same records as our reviews, so it changes when they do.

The advertised price is the smallest size
Mattress prices in Australia are usually advertised from the smallest size the brand sells, which is often a Single or a King Single. The step up to a Queen or a King is different for every brand — so a mattress that looks cheaper at its “from” price can cost more in the size you actually want. The last column of the table above shows the step to Queen for each mattress.
The same applies to everything around the mattress. Bed bases, protectors, sheets and quilts all step up with size, so price the whole bed in the size you want before choosing between, say, a Queen and a King.
Australian sizes against US and UK sizes
Size names travel; dimensions do not. This matters for imported sheets, frames bought from overseas sites, and product descriptions written for another market. Here is the closest equivalent to each Australian size.
| Australia | Closest US size | Closest UK size |
|---|---|---|
| Single 92 × 188 cm | Twin 97 × 191 cm | Single 90 × 190 cm |
| Long Single 92 × 203 cm | Twin XL 97 × 203 cm | No standard equivalent |
| King Single 107 × 203 cm | No equivalent | No equivalent |
| Double 138 × 188 cm | Full 137 × 191 cm | Double 135 × 190 cm |
| Queen 153 × 203 cm | Queen 152 × 203 cm | King 150 × 200 cm |
| King 183 × 203 cm | California King 183 × 213 cm (same width, 10 cm longer) | Super King 180 × 200 cm |
| Super King 203 × 203 cm | No equivalent (US King is 193 × 203 cm) | No equivalent |
The one to watch is King. An Australian King is 10 cm narrower than a US King and 33 cm wider than a UK King. A UK “King” sheet is made for something close to an Australian Queen, and a US King sheet will hang loose on an Australian King.
Split King and adjustable bases
A Split King is two Long Single mattresses, each about 92 × 203 cm, side by side — together roughly the footprint of a King. It is the usual set-up on a split adjustable base, because each half can be raised on its own, and it lets two people choose different firmnesses.
It is not two King Singles. A King Single is 107 cm wide, so two of them come to 214 cm — wider than a Super King — and they will not fit a King frame. Before you buy any mattress for an adjustable base, check that its warranty allows one; the adjustable beds page goes through what to look for.
Bed bases and frames
Frames are built around the standard dimensions with a small allowance, so a mattress a centimetre or two off the standard will usually still fit. Ensemble bases are the exception worth checking: they are made to match their own mattress range, so measure before you put a different brand on one.
Many mattress warranties also set rules for the base — slats no more than a set distance apart, or a centre support on a Queen and larger. Check those before you keep an old base for a new mattress; the warranty guide explains why they matter.
Common questions
Is a Queen bigger than a Double?
Yes, in both directions: 15 cm wider and 15 cm longer (153 × 203 cm against 138 × 188 cm).
How much bigger is a King than a Queen?
30 cm wider and the same length — 183 × 203 cm against 153 × 203 cm.
Will a King Single mattress fit a Single bed frame?
No. A King Single is 15 cm wider and 15 cm longer than a Single, so it needs a King Single frame.
Is a Super King the same as two King Singles?
No. Two King Singles come to 214 × 203 cm; a Super King is 203 × 203 cm. Two Long Singles make a Split King, which is about the size of a King.
Which size does this site compare prices at?
Queen. Brands advertise their smallest size, and that size differs from brand to brand, so comparing at Queen keeps prices like for like.
Do Australian sheets fit an American or British mattress?
Only by luck. Check the actual dimensions and the pocket depth on the packet rather than the size name.
